Artifacts

Artifacts are created objects with origins in the past, many of which possess magical properties. Foon's artifacts are numerous.

Artifacts can often be found by searching dungeons, abandoned temples, and castles.

Artifacts of note include:

• Astral Traps - used to trap entities traveling through different planes of existence. One is found hidden in the Vermilion Minotaur¹

The Dark Lord's Artifact Plot

The artifact plot was an effort by the Dark Lord to make himself immune to death, even the methods of "True Death" that would end the life of a normally indestructible wizard such as himself.

The Dark Lord had discovered a method to jump to another body if his was destroyed using three artifacts, at least two of which had origins outside Foon. Usidore learned of the Dark Lords plan from deciphering clues in loose pages of the Book of Sight, after the Silent Eye suggested he seek those pages out for clues as to the Dark Lord's next move.

There were three artifacts needed for the Dark Lords plan, which Usidore deciphers are hidden "the dark dank caves, the terrible fortresses, and the mystical temples."² This leads to them to:

• The Deep Dank Caverns: a cave in the Little Desert. The Dark Lord retrieves this artifact first, and leaves a note taunting Usidore.³
• The Mystical Temple of Fingaria: Arnie, Chunt, & Usidore enter the temple with Krom The Barbarian, and through it enter the Space Bunker, which has landed on Foon and docked with the temple. Aboard the bunker they find a geode-like object labeled as the artifact. They leave that second artifact in the care of Krom.⁴
• Castle Skullmaster: the terrible fortress is the keep of the villain Skullmaster on Strong Guy Island. While trapped there during the Shattering Arnie, Chunt, & Usidore find a painting of a 13-year old Arnie. They initially suspect this might the third artifact, but with the assistance of Can the Yellow they travel back in time to Arnie's past on Earth in 1989. There they discover a thought transmitter was implanted in the young Arnie by the Mysterious Man to create Robot Arnie. They return to Foon's present with the knowledge that the third artifact the Dark Lord seeks is located in Arnie's head.⁵

Eventually the Dark Lord sends Baron Ragoon to kidnap Arnie, and takes him to an island volcano stronghold to extract the final artifact.⁶

The Dark Lord is concerned that taking the final artifact from Arnie by force might impair its function, and so spends some time trying to convince Arnie to give it up willingly. When that fails the Dark Lord has Dripfang perform a doubling spell on Arnie's head, which allows him to use a copy of the transmitter when he assembles the three artifacts into one. Immediately after completing the artifact the Dark Lord is slain by Usidore the Blue, and to those who witness the moment (including Dripfang) the it appears the Dark Lord's plot to jump bodies has failed. It is only later that Arnie, Chunt, & Usidore discover the effort succeeded, and the Dark Lord has jumped into the body of Carfoon Blemish, who they take prisoner.

In his carfoon body the Dark Lord lacks his magical abilities as a wizard, but he believes that if he can kill the body of Carfoon Blemish he will be able to reconstitute as a wizard again.⁷
