Description
A bag of apples hides the halfling runaway Endwhill the Meek.
Summary
Arnie, Chunt, and Usidore are again on the SS Stephanie, having re-boarded at Dramenshire. They are returning to Cadaver Falls when they notice movement in a bag of apples. Upon opening the bag they find Endwhill the Meek, a halfling stowaway. Endwhill has recently escaped eight years of captivity under the necromancer Frazgard the Incorrigible and jumped ship to prevent Frazgard from recapturing him.
He share stories of his capture and life serving Frazgard, who lived in a treehouse in a cemetery and undertook strange experiments to resurrect his deceased relatives, keeping Endwhill as a servant and tormenting him into submission, thus the name "the Meek." Later, Endwhill speaks of his early life with his parents in their halfling village. Endwhill was the son of the village storytellers, though as he shares more details Arnie, Chunt, and Usidore begin to suspect he was in fact raised by birds.
To prepare Endwhill for his new life of freedom, Chunt gives Endwhill a cape from Frederick the Bear, Usidore gives him a magic bag of apples (and later one of peanut butter and another of paring knifes), and the three of them give him a mock interview so that he can find employment.
After mentioning that he is unhappy with his appellation "the Meek", the trio help him brainstorm a new name, and he settles on Startwell the Fresh. Using Usidore's magic bag, Startwell transports himself to the beach, but once gone Arnie notices his watch has been stolen, leaving them all to wonder if Endwhill's story was true or if he was a simple thief.
