"Candy Shop" is the seventeenth episode of season three of Hello from the Magic Tavern. It was originally released on November 10, 2019.

Description

A visit to a quaint candy shop owned by McTruffle Fondue reveals some strange secrets.

Summary

Arnie, Chunt, and Usidore are in The Dramatic Toad in Vander Village, the snow-kissed town adjoining Jizzlenob Preparatory Academy. When they realize there is no staff and no service, they walk down the street and wander into Sugarpuss's Candy & Gummi Emporium & Toffee Fudge Factory, where they are enthusiastically greeted by the proprietor McTruffle Fondue.

McTruffle, or "Truffle" as he sometimes answers to, shows off several of his magical candy creations, including some, like his gummi (stillborn) babies, that hint at unresolved traumas. He reveals he was once employed by Jizzlenob but was fired for his odd interactions with students.

The trio grows concerned, and Chunt discovers a dead body behind the counter, but Usidore decides to grant Truffle's greatest wish, and animate a gummi boy he has created to be his son. The new gummi boy, who Truffle names Richard, draws his first breath and promptly walks out the door. In his rage at being abandoned, Truffle casts a spell on Usidore, turning his bones to pretzels. He reveals that all his confections are made by transforming once living bodies. He offers to spare the three if they can retrieve his boy and strikes Chunt with pretzel bones as well (when he learns Arnie is recording the proceedings for a podcast and Usidore assists him with an advertisement for the candy shop, he restores the wizard's bones).

Before they can search for the gummi boy, McTruffle introduces them to the shop mascot, Sugarpuss (the cat who loves chocolate and is crazy from all the chocolate), which is a dead cat McTruffle wears on his hand. When speaking as Sugarpuss, McTruffle is more forthcoming about his past, explaining that McTruffle was divorced by his wife, a horse, who later opened a bar in town, The Divorced Horse. He also admits to several murders, and Usidore, having previously assumed the corpses being used for candy-making had died of natural causes, turns on McTruffle and invokes one his secret names, bringing down a meteor that will destroy Sugarpuss sometime within the next millennium.

Chunt suggests McTruffle try instead talking through a stuffed owl, who expresses a desire for hugs. After a magically induced hug, the owl too turns homicidal. To address his loneliness, Usidore duplicates McTruffle and leaves him in his own company, and the three run out. Usidore seals the store and sends it into the stratosphere, confident they have ended the horror.

Just then McTruffle's ex-wife, the horse, approaches them on the street and explains she's looking to reconcile with McTruffle. Usidore summons the candy shop back but finds that the McTruffles and their puppets have already killed each other.

Emails

  • Benjip the Wise wonders if instead of traveling to another dimension, Arnie has just shrunk to a smaller scale. The trio ponder it but the question upsets the horse.
  • Dan A.M. asks if there are different types of birds, and are there bird researchers and naturalists in Foon? There are lots of birds. Divorced horse feels it's rude to study other creatures too closely. Usidore talks of phoenixes and druepixes.
