Description
A demon stops by to share his inner life.
Summary
Aboard the SS Stephanie, Arnie and Usidore are discussing why they had not previously been contacted by the Silent Eye when Chunt arrives in bear form. Arnie assumes that he has had sex with one of the bears, since they have awoken, but Chunt has made an amazing discovery: he can now shapeshift at will, while retaining his badger coloring. He traces the development to Twosidore's magical death on the dance floor of their wedding.
They are interrupted by the demon Xylox. Xylox is an empathetic demon who feels, and is is colored by, the emotions of those he is surrounded by. After growing exhausted by the personal dramas of land-bound communities, Xylox made an arrangement with Corduroy the bear, ship's bartender, to hide out on the SS Stephanie and only feel the low level emotions of hibernating bears. However, the excitement of the trio has awoken him.
Xylox discusses life as a demon, his poor relationship with his cruel siblings, and analyses the feelings of the trio. Arnie admits to feeling inadequate now that Chunt's powers are so much more dramatic. Xylox has rebelled from the Dark Lord and stolen a page from The Book of Sight, which he gives to the Arnie, Chunt, and Usidore. Their dedication to saving Foon inspires and permeates Xylox, who decides to return to civilization and inspire others to fight the Dark Lord. He asked to be dropped off at the nearby Chased Island.
