"Couch" is the sixty-second episode of season three of Hello from the Magic Tavern. It was originally released on October 12, 2020.

Description

We meet a frightened talking couch and the magician that gave her life.

Summary

In the gardens at Castle Skullmaster, Usidore preps a spell to get the obsidian swords out of Arnie's chest. Arnie and Chunt banter while they start podcast when Chunt tells Arnie he misses his Eggy Baby. In the meantime, he is writing a Bangin' Buds story. When Usidore's spell fails, he fishes for compliments on his previous victories.

During mid-exposition, they spot a creature drinking from the creek across from them. The creature reveals herself to be a talking couch, named Couch, who has only lived for a short time and begs for a quick, painless death as she no longer wishes to be sentient. When asked why, another being comes into the fray and introduces himself as Couch the Magician. It was he that brought Couch (or Couch Jr. or CJ) to life when he was practicing taking a coin from his own ear. He demonstrates his prowess by having Arnie volunteer as his assistant and performs many parlor tricks, such as the "rubber pencil" trick and taking a gold piece from his ear. Despite the simplicity, the three are impressed.

Couch Jr. explains that she has been alive for two and a half weeks and was almost burned at a furniture burning held at the castle, thus her fear of being burned. Unfortunately, the couch has no memories before she became sentient. She explains the rules of consciousness; although Couch Jr. has knowledge, she does not have any of the experience to distinguish what things are. For instance, the group help her understand color when she points at a direction and they tell her what color it is.

They are both invited to join Usidore's quest to defeat evil. Couch Jr. doubts her usefulness as she does not have an endless void to trap evil. Couch the Magician admits that he's a fraud and his "magic" is only slight of hand. However, they doubt that Couch Jr. is a slight of hand. Yet, Couch the Magician still wishes to be useful since he had lived a sad existence. In the hopes to change their life for the better, Usidore offers any transformation that they wish. Couch Jr. asked for long hair, which grows by her couch legs. Couch the Magician wanted to see life as a couch, but ended up also getting long hair at the bottom of his legs too.
