"Dripfang, Savior of Foon" is the twenty-fourth episode of season four of Hello from the Magic Tavern. It was originally released on April 24, 2022.

Description

An odd new tavern-goer visits. Could he secretly be Dripfang the Necromancer? Yes.

Summary

At the Strange Familiar, the crowd gathers around Chunt to hear more stories about their hero and friend, Usidore the Blue. Chunt goes on to honor his friend as he had gone the way of the dodo (specifically Ricky Dodo) and they all toast in his honor. Arnie parts the crowd to get Chunt for the podcast. Chunt gathers Professor Scrambles up to the 7 ft tall table to record. Arnie adjusts his intro to include Mount Slobodan (thunder) and the fact they are joined by a new co-host, Professor Scrambles, who is totally not Usidore disguised as a dog. The three go over how confusing all this must be for first time listeners between having Professor Scrambles on and how PK1 is so sad.

A person barges into the bar to make their way up to the gang at the table. Given the weird guy’s accent, Chunt begs Arnie to interview him since they have no guest planned out. The guy, who introduces himself as Family member Number Seven, wants to toast the passing of Usidore, despite the fact that he could not say Usidore’s name. However, when Arnie confuses the order of his name, the person drops the flimsy disguise and reveals himself to be Dripfang LeDesparé. He lunges at Chunt and puts a knife to his throat. He threatens to kill him unless they tell him where Usidore is. The group seems mostly unfazed by the knife and Arnie describes Usidore’s death. Dripfang seems doubtful as Usidore is one of the main lynch pins in their independent venture. He gives Usidore the highest praise of being his arch nemesis and wanted to be the one to kill him, to which Professor Scrambles reacts kindly. The other two continue to be apathetic to Dripfang’s threats, forcing Dripfang to stop the act and dissolve his disposition. Ever since the Battle at Black Spire Volcano where the Dark Lord was defeated with the sword he created, the guilt broke him. He had been wandering around Foon, doing evil to bide time.

The final nail of the coffin was the song “Savior of Foon” that has been spreading throughout the land. While out west, the song reached the saloon that Dripfang was in at the time. The lyrics describe him as a hero that all genders are attracted to, the latter he does not object. However, the song was so convincing, even other villains feel that Dripfang is responsible and go to kill him. For his own survival, Dripfang slayed the villains after him, giving him more praise as he ventures out into the world. To prove his evil once again, he wanted to kill Usidore in front of everyone, only to find that he is dead. He even still carries Obsidian Doom, the sword he forged and now whispers and craves blood. Arnie urges him not to have the sword close to the dog.

Chunt calls Arnie under the table to talk to him. The two debate about adding Dripfang as their new third until Usidore gets back on his feet. Just then, Usidore projects his voice into Chunt and Arnie’s minds, which is later added to the audio. He objects to the idea. Meanwhile, Arnie wonders if Professor Scramble’s mouth is moving while Usidore’s words are reaching their minds. When they go back up to talk to Dripfang, he mentions that the sword was growling while they were under the table.

Dripfang starts to wonder about Professor Scrambles and asks the dog some questions. He begins to notice that under the angles of light made from the bar, he looks good and familiar under the blue light. Chunt tries to cover it up by claiming that Professor Scrambles was a familiar of a witch in town. Although Dripfang has bought it for now, Arnie whispers into Professor Scrambles’ ear to not fuck this up. Professor Scrambles gets an idea and trots away from the table. Another being, who initially sounds like Usidore, proclaims to be alive and reveals himself to be Ricky Dodo, the dodo that died before Usidore. He speaks into Chunt’s mind, saying that he is Usidore, if it is not obvious already and is invited up to the table. Ricky tells his story about how he survived his fall from the cliff by being able to fly via magic.

Dripfang notices his slow change of being polite and “good”, which pisses him off. He begs the group to spread the word better that they were the ones that defeated the Dark Lord, not him. Dripfang lists the names of the group after him, such as the Slithering Syndicate and the Sinister Mix. Although he had killed most of them, he is exhausted from constantly being on guard and doing good by accident. Chunt calls for a time out and thinks he froze time. Instead, Dripfang spots a villain from the Sinister Mix ready to kill him. The host gets distracted with breaking down the villain’s name while Dripfang fights the villain and kills him. Once again, the tavern goers cheer his heroism, further improving Dripfang’s reputation. He takes that as his cue to leave. Before he goes, Arnie asks about Dripfang’s snakes. They are doing well and he is back to his fighting weight thanks to his necromantic powers. Dripfang gets the idea to find Usidore in the nether realms and kill him there. Dripfang takes his leave.

Arnie and Chunt ask how “Ricky” is doing after seeing Dripfang. Dripfang comes back to pay his tab. Ricky says that it’s on the house for “the Greatest Hero in Foon”, which hurts him as he leaves again.
