"Automa-Tawny the Automaton Townie" is the sixty-ninth episode of season five of Hello from the Magic Tavern. It was originally released on August 31, 2025.

Description

Automa-Tawny the Automaton Townie is a clockwork robot that's a local in every town. She was also the winner of this year's March Magic bracket of powerful magic user despite little to no evidence of magical abilities.

Summary

At the Ruffled Feather, Arnie, Chunt, and Usidore welcome the guest who won March Magic on the Patreon: Automa-Tawny, the Automaton Townie. She is a traveling townie who is able to integrate herself deeply in whichever town she visits, and also works as a safety inspector. She shares some of the latest trend in the nearby towns, including wearing vests, saying the word womb (in the town of River Splat), and saying the word tomfoolery (in the town of Feather Dildo).

On the Ruffled Feather menu, they notice a dish called the Automa-Tawny, named after their guest. They all order it and discover it's a spicy hot milk with a viscous texture.

She offers to share trends about how neighboring towns are handling their divorces. Usidore correctly guesses that the town of Scrr is handling them very badly. Automa-Tawny shares that Wagsmorth, the town of all dogs, is handling divorces the best. They discuss the town of Feather Dildo further, whose denizens are quite relaxed. Chunt wonders if the original owner of the Ruffled Feather came from the town.

Chunt asks Automa-Tawny to give them a haunted tour of the Ruffled Feather. She points them to a booth where many people were killed by a grizzly bear and warns them not to sit there. A ghost named Merrick speaks to them but Automa-Tawny is unable to hear it. She confesses that she actually can't hear most things and is just incredibly good at guessing what others are saying. Usidore "busts" the ghost but then releases it from his trap. About 800 to 1,200 other ghosts that he still had in the trap are unleashed as well.

Arnie asks Automa-Tawny what other towns think of Hogsface. She hedges, but implies that other towns think poorly of Hogsface fashion, entertainment, and children.

She shares that she had a good relationship with her maker until she moved out of her original hometown. The hosts observe that that is the one town she is not still connected to, and encourage her to visit her old friends from when she starred in Spells, the musical. Spurred to self-reflection, Automa-Tawny realizes that her relationships in various towns are primarily transactional. She is touched by Arnie, Chunt, and Usidore's offer of long-term friendship and decides to (metaphorically?) be a town unto herself.

Post Credit Scene

Merrick the ghost assumes he and Automa-Tawny are now co-hosts of the podcast, dubbing himself the ghost host. The others express annoyance with him.

New Characters

  • Jeff, a guy with a parrot on his shoulder with mismatched shoes who drinks warm beers in the middle of the day. He fell off of every bridge.
  • Merrick the ghost, whose unfinished business is a pile of reports that haven't been filed. He was killed by a bear at the Ruffled Feather. He longs for cheese fries. Voiced by Matt Young.
  • Tom Tom Bom Bom, the cloud in a suit of armor. He is nice but smells bad. He is unemployed.

Recurring Characters

Flower has a brief cameo.

Earth References

  • Dirty Dancing; "Nobody puts Baby in the corner"
  • Nintendo Power (and possibly the Legend of Zelda?)
  • "Where does it hurt, bubby?" and arm-kissing (no clue what this is)
  • The pink pussyhats worn at the 2017 Women's March
  • Ghostbusters
  • Cheers

Notes

  • Usidore has a secret name that can boil the oceans to the perfect temperature to make delicious pasta
  • Despite making sacred promises to that effect, they still haven't had a double Boy's Night or the guest Tom Tom Bom Bom the cloud in a suit with armor on
  • Automa-Tawny is made of rocks, sticks, metal, glitter, loose liquids, magnesium and electrolytes.
  • Feather Dildo's town slogans include "Don't put us in the dishwasher", "It tickles down there", and "Things feel good in Feather Dildo"
  • Arnie is surprisingly good at solving a magic cube
  • Automa-Tawny implies near the end that River Splat is her hometown, which seems inconsistent with the fact that she hasn't visited her hometown in a long time
